2015 Aston Martin Vanquish V12 Review
We all know about the history and prestige of Aston Martin but often without knowing what the brand and its products really entail. Of course, a certain Mr Bond has given us a glimpse into what it is like to drive and enjoy ‘Aston’, but until you experience it for yourself, you may never truly appreciate it. So when Aston Martin invited us to the launch of the 15 Model Year Vanquish Coupé we were rather excited.
2015 Aston Martin Vanquish: So What’s New?
The two most significant changes to the 2015 Vanquish is the introduction of the new generation AM29 V12 engine alongside the all new Touchtronic III ZF eight-speed automatic transmission, which according to Aston Martin makes this version of the Vanquish quicker and with even faster acceleration than ever before. And despite that extra speed, the rather clever engineers have increased its efficiency to just under 300 g/km, not bad for an all out powerhouse V12.
Ride and Handling
First of all we need to express just how stunning some of the roads near to Inverness are. It felt like the long sweeping bends and stunning backdrop of moody skies and lakeside views were built for the new iteration of the Vanquish.
We started off in and around Loch Ness (no ‘Nessy’ sightings to report) making our way through the town of Inverness where the deep groan of the 6.0 litre V12 engine was already starting to turn heads. At low speed, you get to sit back and enjoy the refined nature of this wonderful car. It’s smooth & elegant, making you appreciate why the Aston Martin brand is so loved and admired the world over.
Take the Vanquish out of the urban environment and you get to experience what makes this car one of, if not the, best in its class and discover what it really is made of. Pushing your foot to the floor and you’ll achieve a 0-62mph time of 3.6 seconds and onto a top speed of 201mph. That is a full half-a-second quicker than the outgoing Vanquish and pushes this version into the category we like to name ‘ridiculously quick’. The thrill of the acceleration with the wonderful roar of the latest generation AM29 V12 engine, we can promise there is no way you will be able to keep that an equally ridiculous smile away from your face. It is a sound that simply never tires, and one we never want to stop hearing. And if you switch the car into Sport mode, that sound just gets better and better.
That 8 speed gearbox really does do wonders, and not only ensure the cars’ exceptional competitiveness in it’s respective category, but also confirm Vanquish as the quickest accelerating production car in the Aston Martin’s 101-year history. With headlines such as those, it is easy to gloss over just how good this gearbox really is, especially when everyone is talking about the sheer speed. However, this new gearbox and the performance it delivers deserve the headlines. All of the major improvements for the 2015 Aston Martin Vanquish come from this new heart. The increase in speed, the lower emissions, and all in all a much more refined drive and experience. The new eight-speed touchtronic III was well worth the wait.
The steering is incredibly responsive and the slight weight reduction and better balance really help the Vanquish grip to the road, enabling you to push the car as far as you dare. We have a feeling you will back down before the car does. You can really feel every inch of the ride, but in a good way. The balance is helped with true alignment of the engine in the front and the gearbox positioned much closer to the rear, meaning you can take on corners with a little more vigour than you normally might and come out the other side with a wry grin on your face. And those always on, massive ceramic brakes that could stop an entire nation if the need ever arises.
Step inside the Vanquish and you are greeted with pure luxury, and even forgetting the incredible drive, you may never want to leave. Every car is hand-stitched and uses only the softest and most supple of leather which is exactly what you would expect from something that is as sublime in every department. If you are shopping for a car in this price range, this luxury cabin will satisfy even the most affluent of suitors. There are options galore, and our chosen model had a rather intriguing burnt orange trim around the doors, seats and on the stitching. This contrast to the carbon fibre on the centre console may not work on paper, but in reality it really did.
The Aston is remarkably well kitted, with a 1000W Bang & Olufsen BeoSound audio system, 6.5″ LCD screen, HDD sat nav, and a notably improved infotainment system which was perhaps one of the most irritating parts of previous models. And whilst the screen is still a little clunky in it’s reveal and placement, the front speakers still retract back into the dashboard when not in use like the slick and sophisticated gentleman it is.
The Vanquish does also come with two rear ‘seats’, but we thought it best to keep this sentence short, representing the amount of room they possess..!
However, if you do want 4 seats (and 4 doors for that matter) in an Aston, hang on as you can check out our 2015 Aston Martin Rapide S review later this week.
Any car with a V12 engine isn’t likely to be the greenest car on the planet and the Vanquish is no different. However, this new model has decreased its CO2 emissions by 11% which is certainly a commendable effort in such a powerful GT. A more efficient yet quicker Aston – what’s not to like? And don’t forget, whilst we all love a V12, the reality is they won’t be around for ever. As emissions tighten and technology advances, the V12 will become the rarest of rare. So make the most of it now!
As you may expect, not much has changed when it comes to the design and asthetics, but given the Vanquish is possibly the most beautiful car in the world, does it really need to? Every body panel is made from carbon fibre, with the gorgeous tight curves and crisp lines giving a classic Aston Martin look.
Aston Martin 15 MY Vanquish Coupe 2014 Verdict
It’s strangely difficult to sum-up what makes this new version so brilliant. Take a look at our pictures and you can see why it’s hard not to stop and admire its beauty. The low driving position, slick contoured lines and the famous wings on the logo gives it that something special from the word go. A car you don’t even need to to drive to appreciate.
Add in a quite remarkable driving experience that is delivered from the 6.0 Litre V12 engine and that all new eight-speed gear box, and Aston Martin have made a wonderful car, even better. Remember though, even with all that extra pace, the Vanquish is still deemed the grandest of tourers, not an uncomfortable race car you can only sit in for 30 minutes at a time.
As you would expect this car isn’t cheap. But let’s not forget what you are getting for your money – prestige, performance and… an Aston Martin. Needless to say, the Aston Martin Vanquish 15 Model Year has continued our ongoing love-affair with this truly British and truly remarkable car manufacturer.
