2016 Porsche 911 R Tribute to Steve McQueen

Steve McQueen is undoubtedly one of the coolest men who ever lived. But while the King of Cool was famed for his iconic moments on the big screen, he was also known to have a passion for petrol. To celebrate that fact, Porsche realised a one-of-a-kind 911 R in tribute to the Hollywood legend this year, and it’s going up for auction with Sotheby’s early next year.
The 2016 Porsche 911 R on offer comes in Steve McQueen’s preferred Slate Grey and is basically what he would have ordered from Stuttgart if he was still around. A more driver-friendly version of the GT3 RS, the 911 R comes with a six-cylinder engine boasting a 500HP output, a custom-built six-speed manual transmission, and four-wheel carbon-ceramic brakes.
The 911 R was introduced at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show to much acclaim after Porsche had heard its customer’s calls for a limited edition 911 with the drivetrain of the GT3 RS. Mechanically it’s similar to the GT3 RS, but there are differences in the suspension, steering, and most notably, the custom-built six-speed manual.
Unlike the GT3 RS, the 911 R isn’t about lap times, however. Instead it’s about creating the most enjoyable driving experience possible. As such, it looks immaculate. Delivered new to Paris, it’s finished in Slate Grey with contrasting silver bonnet stripes and yellow Porsche lettering, and a Black leather interior and bucket seats with houndstooth inserts.
The 967th example of only 991 cars produced, this 911 R also dons personalised illuminated door sills inscribed with Steve McQueen’s famous quote: ‘Racing is life. Anything that happens before or after is just waiting.’
The Porsche 911 R Tribute to Steve McQueen is up for auction on the 8th February 2017 with 25% of the car’s hammer price above its reserve going towards research for curing cancer in children, financed by the Gustave Roussy foundation. Head over to the Sotheby’s Website for more details.
