Ford Unveil a Steve McQueen-Inspired Mustang ‘Bullitt’

A surprise reveal ahead of this 2018’s Detroit Motor Show, Ford have announced a brand new special edition Bullitt to marks 50 years since Steve McQueen fired up his stunning Highland Green Mustang in one of the best movie chases ever in 1968’s Bullitt. Quite simply, it’s gorgeous.

The special edition Ford Mustang Bullitt has been unveiled in the classic 1968 green hue but it will also be available in Shadow Black. Other harp-backs to the film version include subtle chrome accents around the grille and front windows, and classic torque thrust 19-inch aluminium wheels. There’s also a faux fuel-filler cap ‘Bullitt’ logo on the rear.

Inside, there’s a ton of leather and a 12-inch digital LCD instrument cluster, as well as green accent stitching on the dash, door panels, centre console, and on the seats. When you fire the old girl up, the LCD screen gets a nicely judged ‘Bullitt’ welcome screen.

This Mustang performs too. It’s powered by an upgraded 5.0-litre V8 engine that will deliver at least 481 bhp and 569 nm of torque, pushing the car to a top speed of 163 mph. The Bullitt comes equipped with a manual transmission, and the gear shifter features a white cue ball shift knob as a nod to the original.

According to Darrell Behmer, Mustang’s Chief Designer, “it’s my favourite mustang – devoid of stripes, spoilers and badges. It doesn’t need to scream about anything – it’s just cool.’ You’d be hard-pressed to argue with him. But like all Ford Mustangs, let’s just hope the Bullitt makes it way to Europe…
