Ok catch your breath, wow! Say hello to the new Audi R2. After the success of the R8, Audi have been working on a new mid-engined, soft-topped sports car to take on the likes of the Porsche Boxter and Mecedes SLK.
Codenamed the R2, this high-performance two-seater cabriolet is being developed with VW, using parts from the current golf range such as the chassis and suspension, not to mention a further rumour of a four-wheel-drive car, based on the Golf R32’s Haldex system.
Currently engines choices seem to be a mix of 2.0-litre four cylinder and 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbocharged petrol units. With a diesel and possible hybrid version on the cards. All versions will offer a choice between six-speed manual and seven-ratio R tronic semi-automatic gearboxes.
Performance should be pretty similar to the R8, with the flagship model housing a 380bhp beast under the hood, propelling the R2 to 60 mph in less than six seconds but top speed will be limited to 155 mph.
Don’t expect anything till 2011 / 2012 but with prices starting at around £30,000 you have plenty of time to start saving.
