When the R8 Spyder made its debut last year, it was only offered with a measly 540-hp V10. Well, the Audi R8 Spyder now comes in V10 Plus form, and that means you can get a tan on your scalp as well as get bombarded by some 610bhp from a purring V10. The Audi R8 Spyder V10 Plus is essentially your new drop-top fighter-jet.

The R8 Spyder V10 Plus is the latest addition to the current Audi R8 range. Matching the 610bhp of the coupe version, the V10 Plus also features standard ceramic brakes and some nice new carbon body parts too.

Naturally, we’re most interested in the engine. And it’s big. The 5.2-litre V10 is a said to be an ‘object of fascination’, according to Audi – and it’s not hard to see why. Its peak power is reached at a mahussive 8,700rpm, while peak torque of 413lb ft is at 6,500rpm. Like the coupe, the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission is standard, meaning the V10 Plus has a 0-62mph of 3.3 seconds and maxes out at 204mph.

Barring the new engine and the standard ceramic brakes, however, it’s pretty much as you were. Familiar to the other R8 coupes and Spyders we’ve seen so far, the Plus comes with some carbon reinforced plastic used for the sideblades, sills and spoilers, as well as some forged alloy wheels.

It is, though, said to weigh 1,587kg dry, 25kg less than a V10 Spyder. Much of which is down to the brakes and wheels, as well as the standard carbon-backed seats. Oh, and we should mention the new ‘micrommata green’ paintjob option, which we actually like very much.

Official prices for the Audi R8 Spyder V10 Plus are due soon, but it’s rumoured be around the £147,000 mark. If that’s the case, it’s £15,000 more than a base V10 Spyder. Head over to the Audi Website for more details.
