Audi R8 Spyder V10
Unveiled at the New York International Auto Show this week, the new Audi R8 Spyder merges the aggression of a naturally aspirated V10 engine and the allure of a an open-top driving experience, and we absolutely love it!
The 5.2-liter V10 on the Spyder comes with a seven-speed S-Tronic dual-clutch transmission, boasts 540 horsepower and has an acceleration from 0-62 mph in just 3.6 seconds, before maxing out at a top speed of 197mph. Unsurprisingly, it sounds magnificent. Though, interestingly, Audi make no mention of the higher-performance V10 Plus, which is available on the R8 Coupe.
This lightweight R8 is not only rapid but it’s a thing of beauty too, ditching the original hardtop in favour of a new fabric roof. Retractable at speeds of up to 30mph, the roof can be taken down in just 20 seconds, which means it’s ideal for the warmer seasons ahead. If it does get wet, the fabric goes up in the same time.
The Spyder is so lightweight thanks to the Audi Space Frame (ASF) which is made predominantly from aluminium (which accounts for 79.6% of its weight) and carbon fibre. The manufacturing methods used mean each component is 10% lighter than on previous models and means the highly rigid body weighs a mere 208kg.
Inside things are suitably functional with all important functions achievable without having to take your hands off the wheel. It also comes with a 12.3-inch, digital screen which presents all necessary info using rather awesome 3D graphics. Voice control and Sat-Nav are also a standard.
We also love the addition of audio equipment from high-end Danish manufacturers Bang & Olufsen. For the first time, Audi integrates two head restraint loudspeakers into each seat, for an excellent audio experience even when driving with the hood open.
The 2017 Audi R8 Spyder V10 is due to hit dealers later this year, and while no price points have been announced, we reckon prices will be somewhere in the region of £130,000 plus a load of customisation options.
