Continuing our quest to find the most unique and awesome abodes on the planet, our search takes us Stateside to Texas and this incredible home aptly named the ‘Autohaus’. With vintage cars displayed throughout the interior of the house, the Autohaus is any car lover’s dream.
Designed by Texas-based firm MF Architecture, the Autohaus doubles up as a local car collectors’ garage and home. The structure features a compact living area, which is spread across a single floor and floats above an open area flexible for gatherings and, most importantly, cars displays.
The Autohaus is split across two volumes, with the second floor designed to allow for double-height views of the garage at the back, while creating an everyday carport beneath the hovering bed chamber in the front. The twenty-foot cantilever is made possible by steel beams and a light-filled stairwell which provides physical access between the two volumes.
Custom-made steel and glass sliding doors open up the living space to a large roof terrace which is surrounded by tree canopies, enabling light to flood into the lounge and the kitchen, while creating true indoor/outdoor living in an urban setting.
When building the property, MF set up a temporary steel fabrication and paint shop inside the house’s garage. The doors and windows were built in-house on the ground floor before their installation too. The idea was this process allowed for greater quality control as well as full customisation.
