Following the success of the electric i3 and the i8, BMW has announced its first ever plug-in hybrid car, the X5 xDrive40e, which should give the best mileage for any X5.
The new X5 xDrive40e will offer up plenty of power to keep it moving along rapidly despite going light on the fuel. In fact BMW even say you can expect to get a combined mileage of 85.6mpg with just 77g/km of CO2. Combine that with a 0-62mph in just 6.8 seconds and you’ve got a fairly impressive combination.
The hybrid drive-train uses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with BMW’s TwinPower Turbo technology and lithium-ion powered synchronous electric motor. The combined power output is 313hp and 450Nm torque with a top speed serving of 130mph in hybrid mode or 75mph in pure electric. The xDrive40e will use an all-wheel drive system that works through an 8-speed Steptronic transmission and even offers optional paddle shifters on the steering wheel.
In Auto eDrive mode the car will set off in electric mode and only allow the engine to kick-in at 44mph, or when you decide the test the old girl out with a quick burst of acceleration. MAX eDrive mode will solely use the electric motor which will keep the BMW silently floating along for around 19-miles with a 75mph top speed before running out of juice. The third mode is aptly named ‘Save Battery’. It allows for a build-up of the battery reserves for when you need it. BMW expect it to be used when driving on the motorway so driving on all-electric in urban areas can be managed.
Charging from a conventional wall socket will get the battery fully charged in around 3 hours and 50 minutes or 2 hours and 45 minutes if you’re using something a little more powerful, like the BMW i Wallbox Pure.
The standard spec of the BMW X5 is extended to include the Navigation system Professional as well as an auxiliary heating and ventilation system (which is powered by electricity from the high-voltage battery or from the mains supply while charging). Design Pure Experience and Pure Excellence packages for the exterior and interior are also, as are the M Sport package and the bespoke features from BMW Individual.
The BMW X5 xDrive40e will be available from the autumn and prices will be announced nearer to the time. BMW have been doing some great things with electric models so we have high hopes for this.
