Let’s be honest, it has been a long time coming, but, has it been worth the wait? BMW has made the plunge by giving it’s ‘Sports Activity Vehicles’ the world renowned M series treatment. Previewed before The New York Auto Show which will officially unveil the debut of the X5 M and X6 M.
More pics, video and details after the break
Both vehicles get uprated versions of the 4.4 twin-turbocharged V8 that sits in the standard X6. Power goes from 400bhp up to 555bhp and a torque increase, from 450 to 500 lb-ft. Active roll stabilization and adaptive drive systems help give the much loved loved M handling, while a new driver activated M button triggers higher activation thresholds for enhanced stability control. Stopping power is via massive 15.6-inch rotors in front and 15.2-inch discs in the back.
Expect performance to be quick, and probably some of the quickest 4 x 4’s on the planet. 0-62mph in 4.7 seconds and on to 171mph with the ‘M’ Driver’s Package.
Of course you would expect visual modifications as well, and you wouldn’t be wrong. The M series includes wide openings through the grill and to splitter to ensure maximum air flow, revised rear bumpers and spoiler and the trademark four outlet exhaust, you will also find limited edition 20-inch alloys.
Prices have yet to be confirmed, but the X5 M is likely to cost £60,000 and the X6 M around £70,000.
I am not sold on the X5 M, but that X6 is melting butter in my mouth…
