For the 60th anniversary of the iconic E-Type, Jaguar is planning to sell six pairs of restored classic 3.8 E Types in tribute to two of the most famous examples of the car.
The Jaguar E Type – a car many of us know and love. It’s arguably one of the best looking cars ever made and next year it celebrates its sixtieth birthday. In tribute to this milestone, Jaguar will be selling six pairs of fully restored 3.8L Series 1 E Types. One coupe, one soft top.
Each pair will be painted and restored to reflect two of the most famous E-Types: ‘9600 HP’ and ‘77 RW’. ‘9600 HP’ was a opalescent gunmetal grey coupe and ’77 RW’ was a British racing green soft top. They both played pivotal roles in the unveiling of the car at its world debut in Geneva, Switzerland in March 1961.
‘9600 HP’ was driven flat-out from Coventry to Switzerland the night before the big reveal. Jaguar’s then PR manager, Bob Berry, arrived with just minutes to spare before demonstration drives were scheduled to start. It was an instant hit and such was the demand for demo drives, Jaguar instructed legendary test driver, Norman Dewis, to drop everything and head for Geneva. He drove ’77 RW’ through the night to get it there.
The E-type 60 Edition will be built by the team at Jaguar’s Classic Works facility in Warwickshire. Every car will be an existing 1960s 3.8-litre E-type fully-restored to exclusive 60th anniversary tribute specification.
Each E-type 60 Collection pair will include one Flat Out Grey ‘9600 HP’ coupe and one Drop Everything Green ‘77 RW’ roadster. Each with unique paint formulations exclusively reserved for these cars. Every E-type 60 Edition will have a number of 60th anniversary commemorative design details created in conjunction with Jaguar Design Director, Julian Thomson.
