Range Rover Evoque Convertible

If you ask me there are too many new ‘segments’ popping up in the car industry. Bodystyles that we’re never traditionally around until recently. Whoever at BMW thought it was a good idea to take an off-road vehicle and make it into a coupe/saloon/4×4 should in my humble opinion be sacked. On the other hand some just work. Mercedes had a limited audience with the E-Class, it was well made, practical, classy but it wasn’t what I would call desirable. They took that car covered it with a sexy, swoopy body and a new car was born, the CLS.

Now if you’d said to me, do you think a convertible off-roader is a good idea I’d have said no. I’m not sure a 90’s throwback to Jeep Wranglers and Suzuki Vitaras is a good idea. I still thought that right up until I clocked the new Range Rover Evoque Convertible Concept. The standard car is fantastic and for any of you who have seen it in the metal will agree pictures don’t do it justice. This new concept keeps the stunning futuristic looks and simply lops off the roof. Much in the same way you would in an Audi A3 or VW Golf convertible. On this it somehow works and I want one.

This is just a concept for now but it will be shown at Geneva and if there is enough interest for it then they will make it. Specific details about the concept are scarce but I would image this is pretty much production ready. The only worry is how much heavier the car will be as with every car as soon as you take off the top you loose that natural structural rigidity. If land Rover want to avoid their new ‘Premium Convertible SUV’ from being floppier than a very floppy thing then they need to add strengthening to the car and therefore weight.

Will this car create another new segment in the car industry or should it never see the light of day? Have you say below or let me know @DAVETILLYER.
