Could the SureFly Personal Helicopter Be the Future?
The race to be the first to build a flying car has long been over. But with virtually all inventions so far either too impractical or just too expensive, the race to define the future of personal mobility has really only just begun. Well, one company in Ohio thinks the future is with the helicopter. Introducing the SureFly personal aircraft.
After 78 years, the helicopter has been reinvented. SureFly is a personal helicopter/VTOL aircraft designed for safe and easy flight from your home to the office. Featuring eight independent motors each driving a single carbon fibre propeller, a backup battery power system, and a ballistic parachute for safety, the SureFly comes with unparalleled safety for a personal aircraft. And thus makes it one of the likeliest to succeed in the aforementioned race.
The SureFly is the product of Ohio-based Workhorse. The start-up was established in 2007 and was originally known as AMP Electric Vehicles. Workhorse has been working ever since as a developmental-stage vehicle electrification company, with some of their first experiments including adding battery-electric power to two-seat roadsters.
With their tech expertise developing carbon fibre drones and electric battery powered vehicles, their latest result is a two person, 8 rotor helicopter. The hybrid aircraft is designed for a short hop journeys with an estimated range of 70 miles. The four carbon fibre arms on the SureFly also fold down providing a small footprint to store inside a standard garage – perfect for your morning commute!
The Workhorse SureFly is safe, has the range and is said to be easy-to-pilot. Add in the fact that you can now preorder one for around £150,000 ($200,000), and you can see why some think SureFly might be the answer. Head over to the Workhorse Website for more details.
