While it might not be as iconic as the Bat Tumbler it came out of, the Batpod from The Dark Knight Rises certainly isn’t far off. Only six of them were built for use during filming of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, and one of them could be yours as it’s about to go up for auction!
Created by The Dark Knight production designer Nathan Crowley and manufactured by special-effects supervisor Chris Corbould, the Batpod motorbike was used in The Dark Knight by Batman (Christian Bale) during a fight with the Joker (Heath Ledger) and then later in his hunt for Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart).
It was also used – probably more famously – in The Dark Knight Rises by Batman and Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway) during their fights with Bane (Tom Hardy) and the new League of Shadows. Well now it’s up for sale by London’s Prop Store, who are hosting one gigantic entertainment memorabilia auction later this month.
The Batpod on offer is fully functioning and is designed for a rider in a prone position who steers the vehicle with their arms and shoulders. It features advanced design elements such as an exhaust system integrated within the framework and a custom-made chassis with 31″ Hoosier racing tyres and a Honda 750 engine.
Fibreglass body panels painted in metallic Grey cover the bike’s engine and handlebars, while a pair of cannon barrels made of plastic, resin and fibreglass are secured at the front of the vehicle, as well as a laser targeting unit above the right hand grip.
The Batpod was well-used on both productions, so there is a little wear and tear on some of the body panels and the chassis but generally it’s still in great condition. With the lot, the winning bidder will also get a Warner Bros. certificate of authenticity.
The Dark Knight Batpod is being sold at the Prop Store Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auctions at the London Odeon BFI IMAX on Tuesday 27th September. It’s estimated to reach somewhere between £60,000 – £80,000.
