Volkswagen’s New Electric Microbus Is Coming in 2022
Earlier in 2017, Volkswagen showcased the I.D. BUZZ, a fully-electric concept vehicle based on the iconic Volkswagen Microbus from the 1960s. Well, everybody loved it so much that the German manufacturer has decided to go ahead with the concept and bring it into production – and the I.D. BUZZ will be here by 2022.
Yes, Volkswagen CEO of the North American Region Hinrich J. Woebcken said in a written statement that the Microbus is returning in an all-electric reincarnation; “This vehicle is the perfect balance between emotion, usability and sustainability, while also showcasing our technological leadership […] And it’s the perfect fit for the zero-emissions American lifestyle.”
The iconic VW Microbus has a long and illustrious history, especially in US. It began production as early as 1950, and by the late 60s had become the unofficial symbol of the hippie revolution thanks to its ability to transport large groups to rallies and concerts.
The production model I.D. BUZZ will feature all of the benefits of an electric ride, including Level 3 autonomous capability. It’ll come with automatically opening and closing door and according to one test driver, it’ll hit 0-60 in under 5 seconds.
It’s got a very handy battery pack too with a range of around 270 miles, similar to the Tesla Model X and Chevrolet Bolt, and more than the Model S. Design-wise, the updated Microbus will keep much of its original nostalgic styling and shaping too with a signature VW near flat front and maximum space utilisation.
