2018 Sony World Photography Awards - National Award Winners

The 2018 Sony World Photography Awards – National Awards winners were selected from single images taken by local photographers across nearly 70 countries. With images coming from the likes of Australia, Cambodia, and Kenya, and ranging from landscapes to portraits, subject matter across the photographs could also not have been more diverse.

‘Emile’, shot by Shoreditch-based advertising photographer Nick Dolding, beat hundreds of thousands entries to win both the UK National Award and international Open Portraiture category. The shot was taken of actor Emile Clarke when on a set in April 2017 in south London during a promotional shoot for PayPal.

Produced by the World Photography Organisation, the Sony World Photography Awards is the world’s most diverse photography competition. The 11th edition saw a record breaking 320,000 submissions by photographers from more than 200 countries and territories, presenting some of the world’s finest contemporary photography captured over the past year.

Others winner include Junghye Lee from the South Korea for his image of Chinese lanterns, while Santiago Borja from Ecuador and Nicky Loh from Singapore were also noted for their nature images on electrical storms and Northern Lights, respectively. Another highlight is the Czech Republic’s Martin Stranka for his image of a moose and an overturned car in a snowy tundra.

The overall winner of the 2018 Sony World Photography Awards will be announced at a ceremony next month. An exhibition of all winners will run at Somerset House between 20th April and 6th May. Head over to the World Photography Org Website to see more winning images.
