Overall Winners Revealed for 2019 Sony World Photography Awards

The World Photography Organisation has named the overall winners of the prestigious 2019 Sony World Photography Awards. Produced by the World Photography Organisation, the competition is one of the largest and most prestigious in the world and this year saw Italian artist Federico Borella take home the Photographer of the Year award for his series Five Degrees.

The 12th edition of the Sony World Photography Awards saw a record breaking 326,997 submissions by photographers from 195 countries and territories, presenting the world’s finest contemporary photography captured over the past year.

Federico Borella won the Documentary category, as well as the overall category, with judges praising its ‘sensitivity, technical excellence and artistry in bringing to light a global concern.’ Upon winning the Award which includes a $25,000 prize, Borella said: “This Award is one of the most important things for my career and my life […] It is a ‘golden ticket’ that happens once in a lifetime.”


Borella was selected from the ten category winners of the Professional competition who were announced alongside those in 2nd and 3rd place in each Professional category. Other highlights include German Stephan Zirwes’ series Cut Outs – Pools 2018, a set of images from swimming pools which took home the Architecture 1st Place.


Elsewhere, British photographer Yan Wang Preston won 1st Place in the Landscape category for his series To the South of the Colourful Clouds, while Italian Alessandro Grassani won the Sport category for Boxing Against Violence: The Female Boxers Of Goma and Nicolas Gaspardel & Pauline Baert’s abstract series Yuck won the Still Life category.
