5 Blockbusters to Watch This Summer

Everybody knows summer is the best time of year. It means sun, holidays, and for some reason, more beer. But there’s also another reason we love the summer – and that’s the summer blockbusters on offer. So we’re giving you a run-down of the 5 films you need to be watching this summer!
The Avengers: Age of Ultron
April might not technically be in the summer but we couldn’t leave this juggernaut off our list. Marvel’s first Avengers Assemble blew the socks off pretty much everyone and sparked an influx of some seriously brilliant comic books films. But none of them have really come close to Joss Whedon’s corker in 2012. The whole gang are back including Ironman, Captain America, Thor and Hulk, and sees them squaring up against the menacing Ultron, an artificial intelligence birthed by Tony Stark. Expect explosions and then some!
Release Date: 23rd April
Mad Max: Fury Road
George Miller’s return to the post-apocalyptic future he invented back in 1979 sees Tom Hardy take over Max duties from Mel Gibson. The setting is a desert wasteland where civilisation has long since gone and laws no longer exist. It’s essentially a free-for-all where the wicked and cruel rise to the top of the food chain. But there are also two rebels who might just be able to restore some order. One is our hero Max, who is seeking catharsis after the deaths of his wife and child, and fights anyone who’ll have him – usually a bad guy. The other is Imperator Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron, a shaven-headed action woman who is trying to survive a long and gruelling trip across the desert to reach her homeland. The trailer looks absolutely insane and director Miller has promised “one long chase scene.” Yes, please!
Release Date: 14th May
John Hammond’s dream of a functioning Jurassic Park has finally been realised in this summer’s Jurassic World! The new park attendances have been declining, however, due to the lack of new attractions. One you’ve seen one dinosaur, you’ve seen them all, we’d imagine. So the park’s geneticists create a genetically modified hybrid mutant dinosaur, known as ‘Indominus Rex’. Unsurprisingly, it eats breaks loose and eats everything and everyone in sight. It’s then left up to Chris Pratt, the Lord of the Velociraptors, to save the day. We’ve got mixed feelings about this, but obviously we’ll still be going to see it for the music if nothing else. Probably at least 3 times, if we’re honest.
Release Date: 12th June
True to form, the Terminator franchise just will not die. It’s probably fair to assume that, like us, you’re happy to just ride the wave by now. Terminator and Terminator 2 may never be beaten but it’s been a while since we had a film near worthy of the name. The plot for the new instalment has been incredibly secretive but what we can guess from the trailer and what little has been released – Genisys is set in 2029 with a battle-scarred John Connor (Jason Clarke) taking the role of the leader of the resistance against the machines. He learns of a new threat to SkyNet and launches an attack from both the past and the future. Yes, it sounds confusing but at least the plot looks thought-about and appears to be closely linked to the original two Terminators. That can only be a good thing. We’ll just have to cross our fingers!
Release Date: 3rd July
Edgar Wright might have sadly abandoned the project, but Ant-Man has still continued its way to the big screen regardless. The trailer doesn’t give us too much in the way of action but it does give us a tonal feel for the comic book adaptation. We’re willing to bet there’ll be plenty of peril sublimated with cracking one-liners from Rudd to cut the tension. It mainly consists of Michael Douglas, who plays wise-man genius Dr Hank Pym, providing a rousing pitch to our superhero Scott Lang (Rudd) in order to persuade him to don the rubber suit to protect the secrets of being a super-ant. Paul Rudd is always superb value and Marvel have been producing hit after hit, so we’re fully on board.
