If you’ve ever seen any of Denis Villeneuve’s previous work, such as Prisoners or last year’s Sicario with Emily Blunt, you’ll know that the director doesn’t do straight up tales of good v evil. Which is why the trailer for his latest film, alien-flick Arrival, has got us intrigued to say the least.
Usually with big budget other-worldly sci-fi movies, you know what you’re getting; aliens come down looking to take over Earth and wipe out every facet of human life as we know it. But we get the feeling Villeneuve and Arrival might play things a little different.
Leading man Jeremy Renner has virtually confirmed as much saying it’s not like a “big Michael Bay alien movie,” while leading female Amy Adams has also said this “isn’t a universe where superheroes exist!”
Plot details for Arrival are, unsurprisingly for a sci-fi, relatively thin at the moment. But we do know it’ll go a little something like this; ‘When mysterious spacecraft touch down across the globe, an elite team are brought together to investigate. As mankind teeters on the verge of global war, Banks and the team race against time for answers – and to find them, she will take a chance that could threaten her life, and quite possibly humanity.’
We’re not expecting Close Encounters with Arrival but we are expecting good things. Villeneuve has been gaining something of a reputation in recent years, especially after the brilliant Sicario. And the first teaser seems to suggest something eerie as well as beautiful.
Based on Ted Chiang’s 1998 novella Story of Your Life, Arrival’s first full trailer will be touching down next week, while the film itself will premiere at the Venice Film Festival next month before landing in cinema on the 11th November. We’ll be sure to update you with the full trailer, but for now check out the mysterious teaser below…
