Though the summer may only just be coming to an end, Oscar season is incredibly now only just months away. That means we’re treated to a whole host of film trailers, and the latest to drop is The Current War. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Shannon, the film tells the rivalry of two electricity pioneers at the start of the second industrial revolution with Cumberbatch playing light bulb pioneer Thomas Edison.
Directed by Alfonso Gomez‐Rejon (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl), The Current War will tell the epic story of the cutthroat competition between the greatest inventors of the industrial age over whose electrical system would power the new century.
Starring Cumberbatch as Thomas Edison and Michael Shannon as George Westinghouse, the plotline goes as follows; ‘Backed by J.P. Morgan, Edison dazzles the world by lighting Manhattan. But Westinghouse, aided by Nikola Tesla (Nicholas Hoult), has seen fatal flaws in Edison’s direct current design. Igniting a war of currents, Westinghouse and Tesla bet everything on risky and dangerous alternating current.’
On paper it can be a tricky business making films about industrial rivalry sexy, but judging from the trailer, it looks as The Current War will be just that. The scale of the cinematography looks surprisingly epic, and Cumberbatch and the always brilliant Shannon look to be in good form.
There’s also the fact that when a film with such a cast is released at the turn of the New Year, studios are hoping for big performances at the Oscars. So The Current War is certainly one to look out for.
Scripted by Michael Mitnick and co-starring Katherine Waterston, Tom Holland, Matthew Macfadyen, and Tuppence Middleton, The Current War is set to be released in the UK on 5th January 2018. Check out the full trailer below.
