After months of rumours, it’s officially been confirmed that Bestival has gone international! The trademark Isle of Wight music and arts festival will be heading to North America on June 12th- 13th 2015, landing in Toronto, Canada for the first ever Bestival abroad.
Bestival is probably one of the more alternative and diverse, with tons of vegetarian and vegan dining options as well as niche amusements such as a dressing up tent and a ‘secret stage’. Its also infamous for its fancy dress themed days (usually the Saturday). So much so an attempt was made to set the Guiness World Record in 2005 for most people in fancy dress at any one event. A bit embarrassingly, they failed. But by 2010 they got their record, when 55,000 festival goers set a new Guinness World Record.
The festival is heavily involved in supporting social and environmental causes. Bestival is often described as a “boutique festival” due to its non-corporate feel. It’s also known for piloting slightly odd and innovative ideas, including an inflatable church where people can get married.
The music is generally eclectic with previous headliners including Stevie Wonder, Florence & The Machine, The Cure, Kraftwerk and some of world’s biggest electronic DJs. Already confirmed for the UK festival are Chemical Brothers, Underworld and Duran Duran. We did say they were eclectic!
So it doesn’t feel too foreign, Bestival have stuck with their island location with Bestival Toronto set to take place on Hanlan’s Point Beach, in the Toronto Islands, on the Shore of Lake Ontario. The location is incredibly picturesque and, just like in the UK, you’ll still have to get that ferry across from the mainland to give you that sense of freedom and adventure.
Bestival curator Rob da Bank said on the announcement: “We have waited 12 years to decide to launch another Bestival outside of the UK and our beloved Bestival, on the Isle of Wight, which has grown into one of the most important festivals in the global calendar. It took a really special city, and an even more exciting site, with Toronto and Toronto Island, to make us take the leap. We cannot wait!”
We don’t know the line-up yet, but if they’re anything like the Isle of Wight Bestival, we think it would be a great escape for the summer. So keep the 12th-13th of June free, get your passport renewed and check out the Bestival Toronto website to get pre-registered for tickets!
