The first trailer has landed for Johnny Depp’s gangster thriller Black Mass. And boy, if looks could kill…
Black Mass tells the true story of Whitey Bulger (Depp), a violent gangster in Boston who ran a mob while also allegedly becoming a federal informant to take down his rivals. Helping him along the way was FBI agent John Connolly, played by Joel Edgerton, until Bulger’s dodgy dealing got the better of his him and the Bureau began making arrests, with agents double-crossing Bulger.
Bulger fled from the police in 1994 but was eventually captured in 2011 in California and has since been sentenced to two consecutive life terms plus five years for his crimes.
The trailer gives us a good idea of what we’re getting… or more what director Scott Cooper is going for – and it’s undeniably Goodfellas. The trailer is centred around Depp’s Bulger at dinner with an associate. Bulger wants to know the secret to a succulent steak but is told it’s “a family secret”. The associate eventually caves in. Cue a genuinely petrifying speech on the danger of letting secrets out.
The comparison between Depp’s Bulger and Joe Pesci’s Tommy DeVito is obvious and makes us a little cautious that we may have seen Black Mass before. But we’re big fans of Depp and he looks perfectly chilling here.
The ensemble cast is pretty impressive too with Benedict Cumberbatch, Juno Temple, Dakota Johnson, Kevin Bacon, and Peter Sarsgaard all onn board too. Black Mass will be out in the UK on 25th September. Have a look at the trailer for yourself below.
