The standalone Joker film is starting to take shape. Set to trace the origins of one of Batman’s most revered villains, we already knew that Joaquin Phoenix will star as the iconic DC Comics character with Todd Phillips (Hangover, Old School, A Star Is Born) on directing duties. But Warner Bros. have just confirmed the rest of the cast, and it makes for interesting reading.
Following a first look at Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker last week, the official cast and crew of the upcoming Joker movie has been revealed, as well as the Joker’s real name; Arthur Fleck. That’s A. Fleck… Who was the last person to play Batman again? Coincidence? We digress…
As for the cast, previously reported names are all there; Six Feet Under’s Frances Conroy, Atlanta’s Zazie Beetz, GLOW’s Marc Maron and Robert De Niro, who obviously needs no introduction. But there’s also some surprises, with Boardwalk Empire’s Shea Whigham, Barry star Glenn Fleshler, and Night Of’s Bill Camp.
It’s also been confirmed that Robert De Niro and Brett Cullen will play Batman’s father Thomas Wayne — a role which had been heavily rumoured to be Alec Baldwin’s. Bradley Cooper, who has worked closely with Todd Phillips in the past, will join the film as a producer. Other actors confirmed are Douglas Hodge (Red Sparrow, Penny Dreadful) and Josh Pais (Motherless Brooklyn, Going in Style).
To be honest, it’s hard to gauge just how Joker will play out. The cast is eclectic to say the least and Phillips hardly has a pedigree in either comic book films or gritty dramas, having focused mainly on irreverent comedies throughout his career. We do, though, love the idea of Phoenix as the title villain. Hopefully he can do Heath Ledger justice whilst putting his own stamp on the role.
Joker is slated for release in October 2019. We can’t wait for a trailer!
