‘Man in his car’ films are nothing new with recent classics like Baby Driver and especially Drive proving you don’t need much more than a charismatic lead and some burning rubber to keep things interesting. Which is why we’re eager to see Wheelman, a new Netflix original film set to hit the streaming service in a couple of weeks’ time.

Drive Meets Taken in the First Trailer for Netflix' Wheelman

Judging by the trailer that’s just landed, Netflix’s Wheelman ticks all the ‘man driving around’ film tropes. The thriller sees Frank Grillo (Purge: Election Year, Warrior, Zero Dark Thirty) play a nameless getaway driver who finds himself between life and death as an unknown caller follows his every move after a band heist goes wrong.

The anonymous sniper is not only threatening Wheelman, he’s also threatening to kill our hero’s wife and daughter. Queue some wild car chases, copious amounts of crossfire, and some whole load of swears.

By the looks of the trailer, most of Wheelman will take place inside the car’s cockpit, with just the driver’s claustrophobic surroundings and the assailant’s voice dominating screen time. We’ve seen from the likes of Drive and also Tom Hardy’s Locke that this can add some real tension and should make the most of the film’s modest budget. We’re expecting a breathless thriller.

Co-starring Garret Dillahunt, Caitlin Carmichael, and Wendy Moniz, Wheelman is written and directed by Jeremy Rush and is expected to hit Netflix on 20th October 20. Watch the trailer below and let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
