Norwich Man Wins Free Beer For A Year
Being our home city, we always take an interest in any news coming out of the Fine City of Norwich. And one of the more heart-warming stories we’ve seen all year has just come out of The Gardeners Arms (The Murderers) where a patron of the famed pub won a year’s supply of beer after he persuaded his landlord to install a Budweiser pump.
Norwich shop worker Mark Boast, 49, was named as the first winner of AB InBev’s newly launched competition to win free-beer-for-a-year. The world’s largest brewer announced the city-wide initiative last week – to win, all locals need to do is get their favourite landlord to install one of Budweiser’s brews on draught in their pub.
Mark became the competition’s first success story after The Gardeners Arms landlord, Phil Cutter – who is also co-chairman of the Norwich City of Ale Festival – to install Budweiser and Bud Light at his pub. Known locally as The Murderers, Mark has been a regular at the pub for many years, regularly heading there on match days before watching Norwich City FC.
The Gardeners Arms has long been a Norwich institution having been a pub in some form since 1841. The pub gained it gruesome nickname of ‘The Murderers’ following events in June 1895. The landlady’s daughter Millie was murdered by her estranged husband Frank Miles after she was seen walking into the pub with another man.
But despite its gruesome history, The Murderers is one of the most popular pubs in Norwich city centre and even won the ‘Best Sports Pub’ at the Great British Pub Awards in 2015. And recently has been awarded a football-esq bronze statue of Landlord Phil by BT in their ‘Manager of the Month’. Unsurprising given the pub has BT Sport, Sky Sports, and even has TV’s in the toilets so you don’t miss a single second of the action.
The Gardeners Arms/The Murderers is located at 2 – 8 Timber Hill, NR1 3LB. Head over to the Buds For You Website if you’ve persuaded your landlord to follow suit!
