The first trailer has just dropped for Sicario: Day of the Soldado, with Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin back for the sequel to 2015’s stunning first instalment, which saw the duo and Rachel McAdams delve into the dark underworld of the Mexican cartel.
Sicario: Day of the Soldado begins a new chapter to the Sicario series, but the trailer does suggest that thankfully we’ll be getting all the hallmarks of the original which made it so captivating. And the biggest headline is Del Toro and Brolin are back as hitman Alejandro and US agent Matt Graver.
This time the pair are going to war with Mexican cartels trafficking terrorists to America. Graver enlists Alejandro to spark a feud between two cartels by kidnapping the teenage daughter of infamous drug kingpin Carlos Reyes. But when the mission is exposed and Alejandro is ordered to dispose of Isabela, the killer’s cold disposition begins to fade.
Despite its action façade, Sicario was very much an intimate film about characters and it’s great to see that Brolin and Del Toro are on board. Unfortunately Denis Villeneuve has gone onto bigger things since his critically acclaimed original, which means Sicario 2 has Stefano Sollima (Gomorrah) stepping behind the camera.
But we do still have original screenwriter Taylor Sheridan — who also wrote the killer script to Hell or High Water – returning to duty. We just hope they don’t get too trigger happy in their intentions. Sicario was a thinking-man’s action film, and that’s rare in this day and age.
Sicario: Day of the Soldado is pencilled in for a 29th June 2018 UK release date. Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think in the comments or over on Twitter!
