Criminal or hero? Whatever your view, the story of Edward Snowden and his fight against the NSA is one of the most important and defining in modern history. But if you’re not too clued up on the details of the tale, fear not – it’s been made into a film and the first trailer has just dropped!

Snowden Film Trailer

Hollywood directorial juggernaut Oliver Stone is at the helm for Snowden, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the man himself. After releasing a teaser last year, the official trailer has finally surfaced and we think this one looks like it could be a classic.

The film depicts the true story of Edward Snowden, an ex-US Army soldier and computer professional who leaked classified information from the National Security Agency (NSA) to The Guardian newspaper in June 2013.

The film’s script is based on the books Time of the Octopus by Anatoly Kucherena and The Snowden Files by Luke Harding. Though, it should be said, The Snowden Files in particular has been criticised by those close to Snowden.

While the highly-acclaimed documentary CitizenFour captures the moments when Snowden’s name went public, Snowden the film looks to tell the whole story from his army days through to the release of the NSA documents.

Of course, the whole thing is dramatised but you really do get a sense of tension from the trailer and the cast looks impressive to say the least with Gordon-Levitt joined by the likes of Shailene Woodley, Rhys Ifans, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson and Nicolas Cage.

Snowden is set for release in the US on 16th September 2016. There’s been no official date announced for the UK as of yet but we’d expect it around the same time. Check out the trailer below and let us know your thoughts!
