Sphero Star Wars BB-8 Toy

Joes, do yourself a favour and send your Christmas list to Lapland immediately. And make sure you at the top of that list is this Star Wars BB-8 interactive toy from toymakers Sphero!

While figurines of all the Star Wars crew will be extremely collectable when the new film arrives in December, Sphero hasn’t just made any old toy from the film. They’ve gone and created an actual personal droid companion!

First thing you’ll notice about the tennis ball-sized Sphero BB-8 is that it moves in exactly the same way as the droid seen in Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer. That means it’s ‘head’ rotates on a ball that enables the BB-8 to have 360-degree turning angles while moving at around 5mph.

All you’ll need to do is download the accompanying app and the BB-8 can explore your home autonomously, or you can take the lead and control him from your smartphone or tablet. The app gives you plenty of options to keep your new companion occupied: you can guide BB-8 around your home, send it out on patrol and ask it to hide in case of danger.

The most amazing thing about the BB-8 is it’s personality and actions evolve as it spends more time with you. As it patrols, it makes a mental map of the route and notes the dangers it comes across, like a chair leg, and avoids it next time it goes roaming!

The Sphero BB-8 shows a range of emotions and expressions when you give voice commands, so it’ll get scared if you ask it to hide and will get excited if you wake it up from charge, for example. It really is your own droid pet!

The tip of the iceberg is this droid’s holoprojector! BB-8 can play holographic messages recorded using the front-facing camera on your smartphone or tablet. When you press play, just point the camera at BB-8 to see your message as a hologram on your device’s screen.

The Sphero BB-8 toy comes with a contactless power dock for recharging and is available for pretty heavy £129.99. Not cheap at all but this is no bog-standard toy with the incredible technology that’s involved. We’re certain this will sell out rapidly so we suggest you get searching and buying now even if it is a Christmas present. Various stockists include Apple, Disney, Harrods, Amazon and PC World.
