Most Surprising Celebrity Friendships
They often say it’s a small world in the celebosphere. But even so, there’s some seriously wonderfully weird friendships out there – BFFs that you’d struggle to understand how they’d even meet, let alone exchange the hand of eternal companionship. So from Hollywood to Huddersfield, here’s some of the most incredibly surprising celebrity friendships.
Courteney Cox & Ed Sheeran
While he may not have a mobile phone anymore, Ed Sheeran does still somehow manage to find his way into some very familiar circles. And as wild as it sounds, the Glastonbury headliner is very close to Friends star Courteney Cox having been introduced by a mutual friend back in 2013. The friendship is so strong that while writing material for ‘%, Sheeran stayed with Cox for three months at her Malibu mansion; “There was no rent but I made the bed and cups of tea and things like that. If you’re staying at your friend’s house, you should treat it like your own,” Sheeran told The Sun newspaper. The friendship is said to be strictly platonic with Ed even setting up Courteney with close pal Johnny McDaid, Snow Patrol’s pianist and guitarist.
David Beckham & Snoop Dogg
Yes, believe it or not, Snoop double gizzle and Becks are extremely good pals. The two became friends having filmed an adidas advert together, followed by the England and Man Utd great gracing Snoop’s reality TV show. Snoop is quoted as saying, “Beckham and I go way back, he’s like a brother. […] He was terrific with my kids and they had a great time as he taught them how to shoot and score the perfect goal.”
50 Cent & Bette Midler
Probably one of the most unlikely friendships to have ever taken place, 50 Cent and Bette Midler met each other when they worked together on the New York Restoration Project, a non-profit organisation which aims to give all New Yorkers high-quality public space within walking distance of their homes. The relationship blossomed so much that Midler has said of Cent; ”He’s one of the newest members of our tribe. He’s really made my life worth living.”
David Wagner & Jurgen Klopp
Not really surprising given their paths in football management, but you might not know just how good a friends Huddersfield Town manager David Wagner and Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp are. The German pair have shared a budding bromance ever since their playing days at Mainz in the early 90s. Wagner spent four years at the club and Klopp spent seven more, retiring there in 2001 to become Mainz manager. Klopp would end up at Borussia Dortmund and Wagner would follow his best friend in 2011 to become the Borussia Dortmund II manager. They’re such good pals that Wagner was Klopp’s Best Man at his wedding.
Benedict Cumberbatch & Judge Rinder
Benedict Cumberbatch’s wedding to Sophie Hunter may have been an extremely secretive affair, but there is one thing we do know about the occasion. And that’s that the Sherlock star chose Judge Rinder to be one of his three Best Men. If you don’t know who Judge Rinder is, he’s the star of his own reality courtroom show. The pair have been buds ever since they went to Manchester University together, and when the real-life barrister married his long-term boyfriend in 2013, the wedding was officiated by Doctor Strange himself.
Charlie Brooker & Aisleyne Horgan-Wallace
Probably our favourite WTF friendship on the list, Screenwipe presenter and Black Mirror writer Charlie Brooker is great friends with Big Brother reality TV star, Aisleyne Horgan-Wallace. The duo met when Aisleyne appeared on a few episodes of Screenwipe, and the pair have subsequently been on trips to Glastonbury and the US together. The relationship is purely based on friendship with Brooker married to former Blue Peter presenter Connie Huq, but Aisleyne has said that she calls Charlie when she has a ‘girlie crisis’, writing in her autobiography: “Cockroaches in my flat? I phone Charlie.”
Dennis Rodman & Kim Jong-Un
Those in the UK may not be all that familiar with Basketball legend Dennis Rodman, but take it from us – he’s a very big deal. Which is why his mission to meet the North Korean leader was all the more astonishing. Known for his outlandish style and behaviour, Rodman recently became the most high-profile American to meet Kim Jong-Un when he hooked up with him at a basketball game in Pyongyang. Rodman vowed eternal friendship and even called him an ‘awesome guy’, saying that he, his father and his grandfather were all ‘great leaders’.
