The race to get a film made about Lance Armstrong has been hotly contested but it looks as though Stephen Frears has left the peloton behind and got to top of the mountain stage fastest with a first teaser look at his take on the saga in The Program.

The Program Film Trailer

The film is adapted from infamous Irish sports journalist David Walsh’s book Seven Deadly Sins: My Pursuit of Lance Armstrong. The film will follow Armstrong’s rise to the top, battles with cancer and mammoth fall from grace after he had been found to be using performance enhancing drugs. You all know the story.

Chris O’Dowd will be playing Walsh, the hardnosed journalist who was relentless in his fight for the truth, while Ben Foster will take on the Armstrong role. From the trailer it looks as though the story will jump from year to year focusing on Armstrong’s main cycling successes as well as the fallout from Walsh’s revelations.

It looks dramatic enough and both actors look to be on decent form but we’re always weary of biopics when the story and the characters are so well known. Hopefully The Program will bring something new to the tale!

Co-starring Lee Pace, Jesse Plemons and Dustin Hoffman, The Program will hit cinemas here in the UK later this year but no official date has been locked down as of yet. Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think!
