Things to Do This Weekend in London
Celebrating Bowie at 70
Sunday 8th January. £12.
As we approach the year anniversary of David Bowie’s untimely death, there’ll be plenty of events and nights out dedicated to Ziggy. But if you’re going to pay your respects, do it properly at the V&A. This Sunday, the ‘Sound and Vison’ Bowie exhibition will be filled with music, performance and discussions on what would have been his 70th birthday.
The day-long event will include informal singing sessions on ‘Heroes’ and ‘Life on Mars’ led by choirmaster Sam Coates; talks from the likes of Bowie historian Nicholas Pegg; and the day will finish with a screening of David Bowie is Happening Now, about the blockbuster V&A exhibition.
Location: V&A, Cromwell Rd, SW7 2RL. Nearest Tube: South Kensington.
Farewell to Christmas
Friday 6th January. Free.
Each year, the Geffrye Museum’s eleven period living rooms are transformed with authentic festive decorations, lighting, music and greenery to give visitors a magical glimpse into how Christmas has been celebrated in English middle-class homes over the past 400 years. Well, this weekend marks the final days of the exhibition and they’re going out in style with a Farewell to Christmas.
If you’re not festived-out, celebrate the Twelfth Night in the Geffrye Museum’s welcoming gardens. There’ll be carol singing, mulled wine, and cake, as well as the ritualistic burning of the holly and the ivy.
Location: Geffrye Museum, 136 Kingsland Road, E2 8EA. Nearest Tube: Old Street.
