Things to Do This Weekend
Last updated on May 5th, 2016 at 11:13 am
Every week we’ll be giving Joes the best things to do this weekend no matter where you are in the country. Whether it’s the best new bars, clubs, restaurants, films or events, we’ve got you covered!
Things to Do This Weekend in London
Saturday 30th April – Monday 2nd May. Free.
Little Venice is always a good place to head on any weekend. But this weekend the waterways will be even more colourful than usual as it’s the annual Canalway Cavalcade! Over 100 boats will be moored along the stretch of the Grand Union Canal for an event which has taken place every year since 1983.
The boats will naturally be decked out in full attire, while on the drier lands you’ll find food stalls, music, Morris dancers and a real ale tent. They’ll also be plenty of entertainment for the kids. Fingers crossed for at least a little sun!
Location: Between Warwick Avenue and Warwick Crescent, W9 2PB. Nearest Tube: Warwick Avenue.
No. 197 Chiswick Fire Station
No 197 Chiswick Fire Station is the fourth bar to be opened by independent bar group Darwin & Wallace. So if you’ve ever had the pleasure of heading to No 11 Pimlico Road (Belgravia), No 32 The Old Town (Clapham) or No 1 Duke Street (Richmond), you’ll know what to expect; artisan food, delicious cocktails and great vibes.
We headed to the launch this week and loved what we saw. Set in the dormant old fire station, No. 197 is the perfect back drop for relaxed all day eating and drinking. To celebrate the launch, Chiswick Fire Station are even offering 50% off your food bill this weekend. All you need to do is book ahead!
Location: 197-199 Chiswick High Road, W4 2DR. Nearest Tube: Turnham Green.
Things to Do This Weekend in Manchester
A Woman and a Rodent Exhibition
Until Thursday 5th May. Free.
While we love an art exhibition but we appreciate they can be a little too relaxed for some Joes. Which is why we love the idea of an art exhibition in a pub! The bar in question is the Common and it’s hosting an exhibition called ‘Frog’s Shadow Reaches The Rock Before The Frog’ by duo A Woman and a Rodent.
The Woman is Faye Coral Johnson and the Frog is Mike Redmond, and between them the Mancunian illustrators have covered the bar, table-tops and walls of this hip urban haunt. On show will be 80 framed original frog drawings, 64 four leaf clover paintings, plus a dedicated frog room in Joe’s toilets!
Location: Common, 39-41 Edge Street, M4 1HW.
Things to Do This Weekend in Bristol
Drink at Hyde & Co
Daily. Fridays and Saturdays 7pm-3am.
Speakeasy-style venues seem to be all the rage on the nightlife scene, but it can easily go wrong with many lacking in authenticity. One of the best in Bristol, however, (and the UK for that matter) is Hyde & Co, and it’s the true definition of a ‘hidden gem’ with secret rooms and the ring of a doorbell needed to enter.
Hyde & Co is located minutes from Cabot Tower and is styled with suitable prohibition throwback features such as amid standard lamps, leather sofas, framed mirrors and a resident piano which is often put to good use. Cocktails are king here with the bar offering up unique concoctions from tinctures, bitters, homemade syrups and alternative ingredients.
Location: 2 The Basement, Upper Byron Place, BS8 1JY.
Things to Do This Weekend in Birmingham
International Dance Festival Birmingham 2016
Sunday 1st – Saturday 21st May.
This Sunday marks the start of a three week-long dance extravaganza in the UK’s second city. Expect huge outdoor dance spectaculars, world premieres, street performances and innovative acrobatics for the International Dance Festival Birmingham 2016.
While dance might not be everyone’s forte, we reckon there’s something for everyone over the next few weeks with highlights including a final farewell performance in Birmingham from world-renowned dancer Carlos Acosta and a show by the acclaimed Nederlands Dans Theater.
