Things to Do This Weekend
Every week we’ll be giving Joes the best things to do this weekend no matter where you are in the country. Whether it’s the best new bars, clubs, restaurants, films or events, we’ve got you covered!
Things to Do This Weekend in London
Club de Fromage on Ice!
Friday 11th December. £9, £8 NUS.
It seems almost a modern day tradition for Londoners to hit an ice rink over the Christmas period. But we say if you’re going to do, do it properly – for us that means falling on your arse to the sound of Dancing Queen. If you’re with us then head down to Alexandra Palace for Club de Fromage on Ice!
The popular club night will hit the ice rink in North London for one night only. Fancy dress is welcomed but not a necessity and there’ll be games and prize giveaways throughout the evening. Club de Fromage on Ice will feature plenty of musical mayhem with everything played from Sister Sledge to Vanilla Ice – in case we didn’t make it clear, these were skating puns… sort of.
Location: Alexandra Palace. Nearest Tube: Wood Green.
South Pole Saloon
Until Saturday 19th December. Free before 7pm, £3 after.
We don’t know for sure but we have it on good authority that elves like to hit the pints after a hard day’s work. “And where do they go?” we hear you ask… Brixton, of course! The South Pole Saloon is a purpose-built immersive drinking hole which offers a fully heated and covered festive-themed pop-up space.
Naturally they’ll be plenty of booze on offer with Christmas cocktails and Brooklyn beers, as well as entertainment provided by DJs and performances from various artists. Street food will also be a big part of the Saloon with fried chicken, burgers, South Indian and Sri Lankan food, and pizzas all making an appearance. Perfect for the weekend.
Location: Valentia Place, Brixton. Nearest Tube: Brixton.
Things to Do This Weekend in Newcastle
Bill Murray: A Story of Distance, Size and Sincerity Exhibition
Until Sunday 28th February. Free.
The deal is this, Joes: If you don’t like Bill Murray, we’re not sure we want you as one of our readers. Harsh as that is, Bill is the greatest man currently living on our planet and we won’t have a bad word said about him. Which is why you need to get down to Newcastle where the Ghostbusters star is the focus of an exhibition created by British artist Brian Griffiths.
Titled, ‘Bill Murray: A Story of Distance, Size and Sincerity’, the exhibition features a series of nine different style miniature buildings, including a lavish LA beach house, a historic Scottish mansion and an ocean adventure dome, all made with the image of Bill Murray sprawled across them. Quite why we’re not sure but it sounds like the type of perfectly bonkers stuff Bill would approve of. And yes, there is a miniature Mr Stay Puft lurking about…
Location: BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Arts, Gateshead. NE8 3BA.
Things to Do This Weekend in Leeds
Belgrave Christmas Feast
Saturday 12th-Sunday 13th December. Free.
Leeds’ favourite food event is getting the festive treatment this weekend as the Belgrave Music Hall and Canteen plays host to a Christmas weekend special, packing three floors with food, drink, music, art and cinema.
Food will be provided by some of Northern England’s biggest street food names, such as South American foodies Yakumama, meat kings Bangers and Bacon and pizza from Dough Boys. On the first floor you’ll find an arts market which will showcase some talent from the local area as well as plenty of booze and even a film corner for the kids.
Location: Belgrave Music Hall, Leeds. LS2 8JP.
Things to Do This Weekend in Manchester
Friday 11th-Saturday 12th December. Free.
Blackjack Brewery in Manchester has only been going since 2012 but has already gained a fearsome reputation in the area for an extensive range of crafts and their awesome Tap House at the old Smithfield Hotel. This weekend sees their hopefully annual Christmas Brewtap roll out once again – only this time it’s being done in conjunction with another Manc brewhouse, Runaway Brewery.
The festive brewtap bash comes complete with a food line-up provided by GRUB and music curated by Goff. Of course they’ll be tons of crisp and delicious beer too. It’s being held at Runaway Brewery, which is about 50 paces from the Blackjack one!
Location: Runaway Brewery, Manchester. M4 4JW.
