Things to Do This Weekend
Last updated on December 1st, 2016 at 02:03 pm
Every week we’ll be giving Joes the best things to do this weekend no matter where you are in the country. Whether it’s the best new bars, clubs, restaurants, films or events, we’ve got you covered!
Things to Do This Weekend in London
Hampton Court Palace Ice Rink
Until Sunday 8th January. £13.50.
London is awash with skating rinks as we head into December, but our favourite has always been the one set us at Hampton Court. Henry VIII’s sixteenth-century bachelor pad is as good a backdrop as you could ever wish for and this 900m² outdoor rink really is magical when it’s lit up after dark.
As well as lessons for those who aren’t the most confident, there’s also the resident Dip-Dunk Lodge to offer some rest bite from smacking you face on the ice. Offering warming savoury and sweet fondue boards among other winter-friendly fillers like Igloo sandwiches and bakery slopes, Dip-Dunk comes with rink-side views as well as cosy lounge comfort.
Location: Hampton Court Palace, East Molesey, KT8 9AU. Nearest Station: Hampton Court.
Astronomy Photographer of the Year
Until Friday 23rd December. Free.
We love a Sunday afternoon in one of the capital’s photography exhibitions and one of favourites on the calendar has always been the remarkable images on offer at the Royal Observatory’s Astronomy Photographer of the Year exhibition.
The winning images come from both professionals and amateurs in various categories including ‘Planets, Comets and Asteroids’, ‘Stars and Nebulae’, ‘Galaxies’ and ‘Young Astronomy Photographer of the Year’ for under-16s. Even if you’re not into the exhibition, Greenwich Park generally offers some of the best views of the city over the Thames.
Location: Royal Observatory, Blackheath Avenue, SE10 8XJ. Nearest Station: Cutty Sark.
Things to Do This Weekend in Bristol
Christmas at the Spiegeltent
Until Saturday 31st December.
Returning for its fifth annual season, Christmas at the Spiegeltent continues its fine tradition of offering one of the best winter venues in the city. If you’re not familiar with the Spiegeltent concept, think cabaret tent but way cooler. The magnificent wooden round tent comes with stained glass windows, bevelled mirrors and an impressive draped ceiling.
Naturally there’s a bar and also in-built staging area which means there’s plenty going on throughout the season including Christmas parties, live music, DJs, performance, theatre, masked balls, and for the first time the Spiegeltent will also be hosting a New Year’s Eve party.
Location: Christmas Spiegeltent, Waterfront Square, Harbourside, BS1 5LL.
Things to Do This Weekend in Manchester
Festive Farmers Market
Thursday – Sundays.
This weekend sees the Festive Farmers Market hit the Stretford Mall. The pop up food market will boast a host of delicious artisan foods to get you in the Christmas spirit. Think fresh sourdough breads, chutneys, meats, and cheeses.
Throughout their December stint, the Festive Farmers Market will also be hosting a range of talks, workshops, and children’s activities including chocolate tasting sessions and Christmas decoration making classes. The market will run every week from Thursday to Sunday and will open all week from 19th December until the end of the month.
Location: Stretford Mall, M32 9BD.
Things to Do This Weekend in Norwich
Norwich Tunnel of Light
Until Thursday 5th January 2017. Free.
Our hometown Norwich is the first city in the UK to receive its own ‘Tunnel of Light’, and it’s now free to experience until the start of 2017. Inspired by Nagashia Resort’s theme park in Nabana no Sato in Japan, the Tunnel of Light is pretty much what it says on the tin with a 45m long structure decked out with over 50,000 pulsating LED beams of light.
Located on Hay Hill, right next to the St. Peter Mancroft Church, the lights to the tunnel will be switched on every night between 5pm – 10pm for a spectacular display of mesmerising colours and patterns, inspired by the Northern Lights.
Location: Hay Hill, NR2 1QX.
