Things to Do This Weekend in London
Thursday 18th – Sunday 21st January. Free.
The UK’s largest light festival is back this weekend, and it’s bigger, brighter and bolder than ever before. More than 40 UK and international artists will reimagine London’s iconic architecture and streets, transforming the city into a dazzling nocturnal art exhibition, including the likes of Regent Street, Mayfair, King’s Cross and Westminster.
Various installations will be seen across the city including the interactive The Wave on the Southbank, TILT’s surreal take on King’s Cross’ corporate environment with Lampounette, which pays homage to the iconic office desk lamp in giant form, and 448 special Kilner jars forming Stéphane Masson’s Supercube installation in St James’s Market.
The History of Video Games
Until Sunday 11th February. £15.
Celebrating the importance of video games within youth culture, The Subculture Archives on Carnaby Street has transformed its upstairs space into a pop-up arcade. Harking back to the arcade as an important hangout space within 80s & 90s subcultures, this pop-up arcade is both a nod to Soho’s past and a celebration of the early technologies that paved the way for today’s smartphone games and VR.
Original vintage machines will be dotted around, including the likes of Track and Field, Joust, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Donkey Kong, Space Invaders, Pac Man and much more. In addition to the retro pop up arcade, there’ll also be a load of consoles and games from the 70s through to the PlayStation, including the Atari, NES, Sega Master System SNES, and Megadrive. 2 hour slots can be booked for gaming.
Location: The Subculture Archives, 3 Carnaby Street, W1F 9QG. Nearest Tube: Oxford Circus.
