Manchester Science Festival
Thursday 19th – Sunday 29th October. Prices vary.
Manchester Science Festival is back for 2017 this weekend for 10 days of all things science and tech. Featuring more than 100 events at venues across Greater Manchester including Rochdale, Oldham, Stockport and Bolton, as well as the city centre, the huge programme of events includes the likes of a library of fake news, an exploration of the human voice and an immersive insight into forensic science.
Headlining the festival this year, however, will be the blockbuster ‘Robots’ exhibition. Exploring humans’ 500-year quest to recreate themselves in robotic form, the exhibition at the Museum of Science and Industry will feature a unique collection of over 100 robots, from a 16th-century mechanical monk to robots from both science fiction and modern-day research labs.
Things to Do This Weekend in Birmingham
Birmingham Oktoberfest 2017
Wednesday 18th – Sunday 22nd October. Free.
Another October weekend, another Oktoberfest! This weekend it’s Birmingham’s turn with their fifth official Oktoberfest – only this year there’s been some major changes. Firstly, the festival is moving from Cannon Hill Park to the city centre next to Millennium Point. It will also be the first time children are allowed on Sunday lunchtime.
Apart from that, it’s usual German beer festival fare; staff in lederhosen and dirndl serving Bavarian beer, bratwurst, schnitzel, brezel bread and Schweinebraten (roast pork). There’ll also be cider, wine and soft drinks for the less hoppy folks. The tent will hold 1,400 people this year – fewer than the 2,500 in Cannon Hill Park – so we’d strongly recommend booking in advance. Prost!
Location: Curzon Street, B4 7XG.
