Things to Do This Weekend

Things to Do This Weekend in London

Saturday 10th December. Free.

As if the Christmas period wasn’t boozed-up enough, this weekend marks the annual Christmas pub crawl extravaganza that is Santacon. That means hordes of red-clothed Joes and Janes will be hitting the streets of London in a flashmob-style gathering, handing out gifts and the occasional hug, as well as popping into the pub for the odd pint.

Towards the latter stages of the festivities, the three groups of Santacon participants join together for a gigantic festive party. The only rules are dress up, be nice to kids and don’t get embarrassingly sloshed – just merrily on high!

Location: Various.

Museum of Architecture Gingerbread City
Until Thursday 22nd December. Free.

If you’re heading to one of South Ken’s numerous museums this weekend, make sure you check out the Gingerbread City which has been steadily growing opposite the V&A. Put on by the Museum of Architecture, the gingerbread village will exhibit over 100 architecturally designed gingerbread buildings.

Growing day by day, you can go along and simply visit the village, buy your own plot to support the Museum of Architecture, or attend one of the many family workshops that will be put on throughout the run-up to Christmas.

Location: 10 Thurloe Place, South Kensington, SW7 2RZ. Nearest Tube: South Kensington.

Things to Do This Weekend in Manchester

Lightwaves Festival 2016
Until Sunday 18th December. Free.

There’s plenty of glistening lights this time of year but nothing this weekend will match the Lightwaves festival in Manchester. The week long digital light festival is the UK’s biggest and has been curated by Quays Culture.

There’s a total of 9 artworks spanning across The Quays, from the Plaza between The Lowry and the Lowry Outlet, to MediaCityUK’s Piazza, and even in the River Irwell. The highlight should be Voyage by Aether & Hemera which will see a total of 198 origami boats floating on the water in Dock 9.

Location: Salford Quays.

Things to Do This Weekend in Birmingham

Magical Lantern Festival
Until Monday 2nd January 2017. Free.

The Magical Lantern Festival made its Birmingham debut a couple of weeks ago at the Botanical Gardens following the hugely successful UK launch in London last year. The festival is open from Thursday to Sunday each week until New Year, and sees the 15-acre site turned into a light-filled winter wonderland.

A fusion of art, heritage and culture, the outdoor Xmas-themed event sees Joes and Janes embarking on a fascinating journey through the gardens uncovering stunning lanterns in all shapes, colours and sizes from Santa and reindeers to flowers and animals. There’ll also be a range of international food and drink vendors on duty to keep you suitably refreshed.

Location: Birmingham Botanical Gardens, Westbourne Rd, B15 3TR.

Things to Do This Weekend in Edinburgh

Santa Run
Sunday 11th December. Free.

Once again, Scotland’s fundraising Santas will run, walk and stroll around West Prices Street Gardens this weekend. The short 2.5km Santa Run will be raising money for When You Wish Upon A Star, a charity set up to help children living with a life threatening illness throughout Scotland.

It’s a bit of a Christmas tradition in Edinburgh with absolutely everyone invited to join in, no matter your age or ability. Naturally there’ll be plenty of smaller events going on around the route, so if you can’t/don’t want to do the run, you can still make a day of it.

Location: Starts at the Ross Bandstand at West Princes Street Gardens.
