Tom Cruise is once again in the cockpit, but it’s not for the new Top Gun. This time the pint-sized Cruisader stars in American Made as a pilot turned drug smuggler for one of history’s most infamous drug lords, Pablo Escobar. Check out the first full trailer for American Made.
Based on the life of Barry Seal, Cruise stars as a former TWA pilot who attracts the attention of the DEA as they want Seal to run one of the biggest covert operations in U.S. history. Soon he becomes an informant and carries cocaine for Pablo Escobar and the famed Medellin cartel during the 1980s.
American Made is helmed by The Bourne Identity and Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman, and while the film is based on a true story, it looks from the trailer as though Cruise and Liman have gone for the embellishment of the tale with some good one-liners and set-pieces, with Cruise playing the clown as opposed to the action hero we’re so used to seeing.
He’s playing the everyman who simply gets caught up in a life of crime, and we’re enthused to see Cruise take on something far more relatable. It’ll be interesting to see how Pablo Escobar is portrayed too, seeing as he’s so engrained in our minds after the brilliant performance by Wagner Moura in Netflix’ Narcos.
The supporting cast is also promising with the always great Domhnall Gleeson (The Force Awakens, Ex Machina) and Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad) also starring. Not to mention Liman is one of the safest pair of hands in Hollywood. In short, we’ve got some high hopes!
Co-starring Sarah Wright and E. Roger Mitchell, American Made is slated for release 29th September. Check out the full trailer below.
