Having kept the first teaser trailer light on action and real plot details, fanboys have finally been given their first look at Tom Hardy with a giant tongue and covered in black goo as the symbiotic antihero in the first full trailer for Venom.
Tom Hardy stars as Eddie Brock, probably the darkest comic book character around. Having first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man comics in 1988 as a supervillain, the sentient alien became more of an antihero and is one of the most complex characters in the Marvel universe.
The whole Venom project has been shrouded in secrecy up to this point, and even after the first trailer, it was still hard to get a feel for the project. We knew it was an origin story, telling how Eddie Brock went from journalist to badass but following a trailer which landed this morning, we have a whole load to talk about…
The new trailer gives us our first glimpse of Hardy in full Venom-mode. Taken over by a synthetic symbiote (Google it), Brock’s body is taken over and is now capable of kicking ass with some handy extra limbs. The only snag? He has to share that body and deal with a sinister voice in his head.
There were rumours than Riz Ahmed would be playing Carnage, but the latest trailer reveals he’s been cast as Dr. Carlton Drake, who in the comic book is the leader of the Life Foundation – a group looking to tap into Venom’s power and replicate it. Four-time Oscar nominee Michelle Williams will be playing Brock’s love interest.
Venom is set to be rated R in the States, which means it’ll at least be a 15 Certificate here in the UK. That can only be a good thing given the dark source material, and the first full trailer indicates that the film is heading in a similar direction. Though it should be said, there does seem to be scope for some laughs with Hardy nailing some one liners.
Venom opens in UK cinemas on 5th October 2018.
