Watch Alicia Vikander Raid Tombs in the First Trailer for Tomb Raider
It’s been almost 15 years since one of video games’ biggest icons, Lara Croft, hit the silver screen with Angelina Jolie at the helm. But like all successful films, Tomb Raider is getting a reboot with an Academy Award nominee no less as its lead star. So without haste, take a look at Alicia Vikander in the first full trailer for Tomb Raider.
First thing’s first, get the Angelina Jolie versions erased from your memories – this Lara Croft flick promises to be a very different entity. Tomb Raider (2018) is most definitely a prequel, with Croft starting the film working as a cycle courier in London.
Loosely based off the reimagined Tomb Raider video game from 2013, Vikander’s Croft isn’t searching for some priceless lost artefact but is on a quest to find her missing father (Dominic West). She soon finds herself stuck on an island where she must learn to adapt to her surroundings in order to survive.
The reboot is directed by relatively unknown Norweigan filmmaker Roar Uthaug, which is a fairly bold move for a studio. The cast is also far from stacked full of star names with Walton Goggins and Daniel Wu joining Vikander and West. Though veteran Kristin Scott Thomas does also feature.
But the lack of supporting names and a newbie director shouldn’t put you off. Judging from the trailer, Vikander looks perfectly cast as Lara Croft, fusing youthful exuberance with badass parkour skills. And there looks to be just the right amount of slow-mo leaping shots to make Tomb Raider a must-watch when it arrives in the new year.
Tomb Raider is set for release in the UK in March 2018. Check out the trailer below.
