Top 5 Plot Twist Films
There’s no better way to sell a film to a fellow Joe than guaranteeing them a good twist. A well-worked twist can compensate the most boring of scripts and even make re-watching the film a must. Many directors have made a living off them with one of the greatest directors of all time, Alfred Hitchcock, famously telling his audiences not to give away the twist in Psycho.
But as twists are so damn popular, genuinely shocking an audience into seeing something they’re not expecting has become notoriously tough in recent years. So we’re going to take a look back to some of the greatest plot twists ever to hit cinema! Just remember, if you haven’t seen any of the below, skip past that read and get watching pronto!!
5. The Sixth Sense Plot Twist (1995)
The Plot: A young Haley Joel Osment has a rather unusual problem. You know the score – he sees dead people. But the boy has some help to get through the trauma in the form of a friendly psychologist played by Bruce Willis. Bruce has his problems too with his wife, who doesn’t seem to even acknowledge him.
The Twist: There’s a reason Bruce’s wife isn’t talking to him – he’s dead and only Haley Joel can see him!
4. Planet of the Apes (1968)
The Plot: A crew of astronauts, including Charlton Heston, come out of deep hibernation to find that their ship has crash-landed on a planet in the distant future where intelligent talking apes are the dominant species, and humans are the oppressed and enslaved.
The Twist: After seeing the long arm of the Statue of Liberty, Chuck realises that the planet is none-other than our very own Earth! The final scene has become so iconic that the distributors don’t even care about spoiling the twist by putting the Lady on the DVD cover!
3. Empire Strikes Back Plot Twist (1980)
The Plot: After the rebels have been overpowered by the Empire on their newly established base, our hero Luke Skywalker gets some Jedi training with Yoda. A few scenes later, we finally see him facing the big bad Darth Vader at Cloud City. Queue the mother of all lightsaber fights!
The Twist: Darth Vader, the embodiment of everything that is evil in the galaxy, is only Luke’s bloody dad! We reckon this twist has been parodied more than maybe any other scene in the history of cinema – let alone twist.
2. Fight Club Plot Twist (1999)
The Plot: An office worker (Edward Norton) decides he needs to change his lifestyle. While attending self-help groups, he crosses paths with a devil-may-care soap maker named Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) and forms an underground fight club, as well as starting a campaign against corporate America called Project Mayhem. As the movement spirals out of control, Norton tries to shut it down.
The Twist: Edward Norton IS Tyler Durden! As Tyler Durden says, “I look like you wanna look, I fuck like you wanna fuck, I am smart, capable, and most importantly, I am free in all the ways that you are not.” Watching this film a second time makes you kick yourself that you never saw it coming!
1. The Usual Suspects Plot Twist (1995)
The Plot: When a heist goes wrong and leaves a shed load of dead bodies, it’s down to inspector Dave Kujan to solve the case. To help him along the way, he calls upon a limping, pathetic con-man named Verbal Kint (Kevin Spacey) to see if he can shed any light on the mysterious and brutal crime lord known as Keyser Soze.
The Twist: Thinking Kint is of no more use, Kujan sends him on his way. As Kint walks out of the police station, Kujan starts to piece things together and realises he’s been told a whole load of lies. Simultaneously, out on the street, Kint shakes off his limp, lights a cigarette and rides off into the sunset. Yes, he’s Keyser Soze! And like that, he’s gone.
