wagamama x Meantime Asian-Inspired Beers
Noodle and katsu kings wagamama has collaborated with the Greenwich’s modern craft pioneers, Meantime Brewing Company, for two brand new craft pale ales exclusive to wagamamas; Kikku and Kansho. We headed down to wagas on Dean Street last week to get a taste of things!
Given wagamama’s Japanese heritage, unsurprisingly each wagamama x Meantime beer is uniquely infused with Asian-inspired flavours used to enhance and complement the key ingredients used in popular dishes at the chain. And after much testing of ingredients – including the likes of miso and seaweed – Kikku and Kansho are the results.
Created by wagamama’s executive chef, Steve Mangleshot, alongside Meantime’s head brewer, Ciaran Giblin, Kikku (meaning ‘kick’ in Japanese) is a shichimi infused pale ale. Shichimi is the Japanese seven spice mix, and therefore offers the beer a subtle kick and slight heat. The second beer, Kansho (meaning ‘zesty’), has been brewed using fresh lime and ginger.
We enjoyed both beers on tasting and can see the logic behind the brewery – each beer will compliment different dishes on the wagamama menu. The Kikku is subtle but packs the body of Meantime’s Pale Ale, while the Kansho is a perfectly crisp take on a ginger beer.
We think the Kikku pale ale is perfect for the restaurant’s richer dishes such as the Short Rib Ramen or the Grilled Duck Donburi, while the Kansho works amazingly with any of the lighter, citrus infused dishes such as Raisukaree or a side of Lollipop Prawn Kushiyaki.
The two wagamama x Meantime craft beers have launched nationwide today, so just ask for them at your local wagamama restaurant. Head over to the wagamama Website for more details.
