World’s Biggest Foods
It’s Pancake Day and that means we fill ourselves silly with sugar, lemon and thin cakey goodness. Being the big kids that we are, this got us wondering at AJ HQ what the biggest pancake ever made was. Well, take a look our list of some of the world’s biggest foods to find out!
World’s Biggest Hot Dog
First up is the only commercially available food on our list! While bigger ones have been made for competitions, the Big Hot Dog comes in at a whopping 3.18kg! It was invented in 2011 by Gorilla Tango Novelty Meats CEO Dan Abbate and measures in at a huge 40.64cm long and 10.16cm in diameter. If you want to get hold of one, it’ll only cost you and your fellow Joes around £27 ($40)! You would have to head to Chicago, though…
World’s Biggest Pancake
We’re extremely proud to confirm that the largest pancake ever made was created right here in good old Blighty. It was made in 1994 in Rochdale to be exact by the Co-Operative Union, Ltd. The beast measured in at just over 15 metres in diameter and was 2.5 cm thick. It weighed 3 whole tonnes and took a bunch of cranes to flip it! Makes you proud to be British!
World’s Biggest Gingerbread House
While a lot of the world’s biggest foods don’t catch the eye as you’d imagine, one of the coolest looking records on our list is this world’s largest gingerbread house which was created in 2013 in Bryan, Texas. It covered 2,520 square feet, and was 21ft in height. It wasn’t the healthiest of treats either as it packed an estimated 35.8 million calories!
World’s Biggest Pizza
We were relieved to discover that the world’s biggest pizza was indeed made by Italians back in 2012. The title had previously been held by South Africa since 1990 but the margherita pizza made in Rome measured in at 40 metres in diameter and used a mammoth 9,000kg of flour to make. In total, the juggernaut weighed in at 23,250kgs after five Italian chefs spent over 48 hours baking the dough in over 5,000 batches. The pizza ended up being donated to local food shelters – hopefully already sliced!
World’s Biggest Cake
The world’s largest cake sculpture, according to Guinness World Records, measured in at 16.46m x 13.94m x 0.54m and was achieved by National Association Cake Designers Italy in Milan, 2015. The sculpture was a map of Italy complete with 3D models of major Italian landmarks, including the Leaning Tower and Pisa and the Colosseum. It was made by 250 cake designers and is probably the most detailed record-holder on our list!
World’s Biggest Cookie
The largest cookie, and indeed biscuit, ever recorded was made by the Immaculate Baking Company in Flat Rock, North Carolina on 17th May 2003. The chocolate chip cookie weighed 18 tonnes and had a diameter of 30.7 metres – a total measurement of 754m²!
World’s Biggest Burger
While there’s more impressive looking ones floating around the internetsphere, officially the largest ever hamburger was made by Black Bear Casino Resort in Minnesota back in September, 2012. The giant weighed in at 913.54 kg and was topped with 23.81 kg of tomatoes, 22.68 kg of lettuce, 27.22 kg of onions, 8.62 kg of pickles, 18.14 kg of American cheese and 7.48 kg of bacon. Literally a heart attack on a plate!
World’s Biggest Chocolate Coin
Believe it or not, there is actually such thing as the world’s biggest chocolate coin. Complete with silver foil packaging, the chocolate coin to end all Christmas stockings was presented at the Ciocco Show Exhibition in Bologna, Italy back in 2012. It weighed in at 658kg and was almost 500 times as heavy as a standard bar of chocolate. The coin was actually made to mark Guinness World Records Day, so they had to give them the title really.
World’s Biggest Sandwich
We all dream of it, so we’ve saved the best to last. The world’s biggest sandwich title was awarded in 2011 in Lebanon when three teams of 136 people prepared and cooked the world’s largest sandwich! Along with the help of 639 participants who helped to fill the beauty, the makers of this delicious creation managed to create something that weighed a huge 557kg and measured in at an even more impressive 735 metres long! The sandwich needed four custom-made movable ovens to be cooked after it had been filled with chicken, lettuce, tomato, pickles, mayonnaise, red vinegar, salt, mustard, white pepper, lemon juice, kammoun spices and coriander. A tasty giant too!
Incidentally, our absolute favourite world’s biggest food attempt story concerns the making of a sandwich. In 2008, some Joes in Iran tried to crack the record of biggest sandwich but failed. It measured in at an eye-watering 1,500 metres long – double that of the Lebanese record – but before it was officially measured, the crowd started to feast on the ostrich and chicken-filled monster and the attempt was discredited! Proof if any, Joes, that patience is a virtue.
