It’s everywhere in America but Hard Seltzer hasn’t really made an impact on our shores. White Claw are hoping to change that this summer. But what is Hard Seltzer? It’s actually quite simple. It’s sparkling water, alcohol and some kind fruit flavouring. It has the benefit of being quite refreshing and very low in calories (95 for the White Claw). The perfect summer drink then?
White Claw kindly sent us a selection of their flavours. Black Cherry, Raspberry and Natural Lime. The cans are about the size of a Red Bull can and are 4.5% vol. Basically as alcoholic as your average lager.
We resisted the temptation to crack them straight open and popped them in the fridge to get nice and cold. Like most of our favourite alcoholic beverages these drinks are best served cold straight from the fridge.
The Black Cherry and Raspberry were both very nice and the flavour is subtle. More refreshing than beer on a really hot day. You don’t really feel like you’re drinking alcohol at all. Which in large amounts could be dangerous! I suspect they are less likely to give you a stonking hang-over than many other alcoholic drinks. I cannot comment there though!
The Natural Lime was easily my favourite though. It’s not to far from the soda and lime I used to drink when I would drive on nights out. Very refreshing and easily something I could drink whilst operating the BBQ.
Overall I’m not sure the Hard Seltzer is going to lure me away from a good craft beer but on those occasions where I’m not in the mood for that, I’ll definitely have some of these in the fridge.
White Claw Hard Seltzer is priced at £2.50 per 330ml can (4.5% ABV) and is available in Raspberry, Lime and Black Cherry flavours. It has been stocked in Morrisons, Tescos and Sainsbury’s superstores nationwide from June 1st 2020.
