The 2018 Miss Universe was crowned last night, as Catriona Gray – otherwise known as Miss Philippines – beat 93 other contestants to take the tiara. The 24-year-old Filipina-Australian pipped South African Demi Leigh Nel-Peters and Miss Venezuela, Sthefany Gutiérrez to the top spot.
Yes, Catriona Gray become the fourth Filipina to bring home the coveted title of Miss Universe at a ceremony in Bangkok last night. Ahead of Monday’s final, much of the focus was on Miss Spain, Angela Ponce, who was the first transgender contestant ever in the competition’s history. Unfortunately for Ponce, she failed to make the top 20.
Catriona Gray made history of herself too. Back in 2016 she was named Miss World Philippines, making her the first woman in history to have been awarded both World and Universe national titles.
The 24-year-old singer and model’s father is Australian, and she grew up in Cairns, Australia, before studying at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. On winning the 67th Miss Universe pageant Gray said; “My heart is filled with so much gratitude […] There were moments of doubt where I felt overwhelmed and I felt the pressure.”
