Who’s That Girl: Bohemian Rhapsody’s Lucy Boynton
Bohemian Rhapsody has taken the box office by storm with many tipping Rami Malek’s portrayal of the late, great Freddie Mercury to get some love when awards season comes around in the new year. But Malek wasn’t the only one to catch our attention in the film; as part of our ‘Who’s That Girl’ series, we take a look at Bohemian Rhapsody’s Mary Austin, AKA Lucy Boynton.
While she may have received her biggest role to date in Bohemian Rhapsody, Lucy Boynton is far from a newbie. Born in New York City and raised in London, Boynton got her first feature film role at the age of 12 when she starred as a young Beatrix Potter in 2006’s Miss Potter.
During her teens and early adulthood, she also featured in numerous British TV shows. The year after Miss Potter, she starred in the BBC film Ballet Shoes before going on to take roles in the likes of Lewis, Endeavour, and Law & Order UK, as well as playing the role of Margaret Dashwood in a BBC adaptation of Sense and Sensibility.
Bohemian Rhapsody wasn’t her adult big screen debut either. In 2016, she played the mysterious model Raphina in 2016’s Irish hit Sing Street, and also starred as Countess Helena Andrenyi in the 2017 adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express.
But it’s Boynton’s role as Freddie Mercury’s partner Mary Austin which is set to propel her into the limelight along with co-star and real life partner, Rami Malek.
