adidas Futurecraft Biofabric Biodegradable Shoe
Forever at the forefront of footwear technology, adidas have unveiled the world’s first performance shoe made using Biosteel fibre. A replication of natural silk, the biofabric is performance friendly whilst also being completely biodegradable. Introducing the adidas Futurecraft Biofabric.
The adidas Futurecraft Biofabric shoe features an upper made from 100% Biosteel fibres, a nature-based and completely biodegradable high performance fibre which has been developed by the German biotech company, AMSilk.
The material offers a unique combination of properties that are perfect for high sporting performance, such as being 15% lighter than conventional synthetic fibres, as well as being the strongest fully natural material available to man.
But one of the main selling points of the Biofabric shoe prototype is to illustrate how footwear can be performance-friendly while still being eco-friendly. Biosteel fibres are 100% naturally biodegradable which means the material is far more sustainable than pretty much any other footwear material used today.
adidas have been working in partnership with Parley for the Oceans, an activist group hoping to clean the oceans of plastic by campaigning for brands to use virgin plastics and recycled plastics in their manufacturing. The pair even combined earlier in the year to release the first mass produced footwear created using Parley Ocean Plastic, the UltraBOOST Uncaged Parley.
The adidas Biofabric shoe is just another step in adidas’ commitment to redefining the sport industry, and comes in a year where adidas has released a series of products that have pushed the boundaries of trainer innovation.
While the adidas Futurecraft Biofabric Shoe is only a prototype, we’d be surprised if something similar wasn’t on the market soon enough. adidas are showing some real commitment to environmental issues and their relationship with Parley for the Oceans shows no signs of ending.
