Founded in 1993 in Harajuku, Tokyo – ‘A Bathing Ape’ or ‘BAPE’ is one of the leading casual fashion brands in the world and a brand synonymous with urban style icons like Kanye West & Pharrell Williams (who’s clothing line Billionaire Boys Club is co owned and head designed by BAPE founder Nigo).
The company specializes in men’s, women’s and kids’ lifestyle and street wear, but on this occasion it is a watch that has caught our eye. The BAPE Type 3 Bapex watch launched recently, and this newest incarnation of BAPE’s ode to Rolex is heavily inspired by the timeless Rolex Daytona.
Now a kill-joy would say it is not the same as buying the real thing, and ultimately they would be right, but we can’t help but feel that the Bape Type 3 Bapex Watch is still a nifty bit of kit. Instead of a Swiss automatic movement which is resident in the Rolex Daytona, The Type 3 is powered by a reliable and more affordable Japanese quartz. The external aesthetic is nonetheless special, with a robust yet elegant polished stainless steel casing, and a choice of black or white dial options (the white face just pips it for me). The Type 3 features chronograph dials, the company ‘Ape’ logo on the face and also on the back of the watch, and displays the rather tongue-in-cheek lines “made by human” & “ape shall never kill ape.”
It retails at around the £500 mark, which when you consider the Rolex Daytona comes in just shy of £8000, you really would have yourself a bargain – Copycat or no copycat! Let us know what you think of the Bape Type 3 Bapex. DS
