The Chinese New Year is always a good time of year for dedicated sneaker releases. Although it’s on the 28th of January this year, a lot of sneaker companies are getting in early with their designs and drops to get your feet dressed suitably for the event. Adidas, Nike and Jordan are all hoping that you’ll think theirs are the best.

Chinese New Year Sneakers

Last year, Jordan put out a fantastically designed Jordan V CNY, which had excellent and rather colourful detailing. This year they return with not one, but three different CNY celebratory releases in the Air Jordan XXXI and two Air Jordan 12 retros. The adults 12 retro comes in the truly classic taxi colourway and a reflective upper, with added detailing including a bamboo wood grained Jumpman tab, similar wooden eyelets at the top and a “12” in Chinese characters on the tongue. This is similar for the girls retro 12, which comes in a cream colourway with the same bamboo wood detailing and Chinese characters. The newest Jordan XXXI is also a part of the CNY pack, which comes in a black and white colourway, with an icy outsole with a bamboo pattern underneath, and bamboo detailing on the heel.

Nike have unveiled a whole host of CNY themed sneakers. There are the Nike iD patterns available for the Air Force 1s, the Air Force 1 Jade Nai Ke designs, the Cortez Nai Ke. These aren’t quite revolutionary, but they are all nice touches that update and refresh some true Nike classics. Whilst the iD designs on the Air Force 1 are incredibly customisable in colour, location of pattern and other options, they are quite divisive. Meanwhile, the clean Jade pack releases are much more subtle and clearly have a touch more class. The Cortez has proven to be the most popular of these, dropping early and selling out in the UK.

Adidas equally didn’t want to be left out. Last year we saw their CNY ultra boost design released in very limited numbers sell out in mere seconds. This year, they have updated the ultra boost 3.0 with a multicolour design and a CNY logo on the tongue. They dropped secretively and quickly yet again, selling out, but there are still chances of a restock, so keep an eye open. Of course, that’s not all that Adidas had up their sleeve. The EQT Support 96/16 are released in a very special Year of the Rooster box and design. The classic EQT Support 93 upper comes in premium materials, in an off-white cream tone with a-symmetrical green and red support tabs on the boost soles, an embroidered rooster on the heel. There’s textured Primeknit and a CNY themed insole too. This may be our favourite CNY release. A series of updated lifestyle silhouettes have also been released in the form of the rooster adorned Superstar, Radial and Stan Smith. However, Adidas also have a more sporty release, updating their brand new Dame 3 silhouette in a black, white and red colourway with a rooster themed pattern on the midsole and a CNY logo on the heel. These are certainly eye catching, but we think they are unlikely to transition off the court and into everyday wear well.
