ellesse Penguin Collection
The last couple of years has seen a real resurgence from sportswear brands who were particularly prominent in the 80s and 90s. No brand has seen more of push than the terrace label ellesse and that looks set to continue heading into 2016.
The Italian sportswear brand have just re-released their Penguin branding which was originally introduced all the way back in 1967. In an era where the hippy movement was sweeping the Western world, ellesse were gaining notoriety for producing some of the must-have sportswear on the market.
The original penguin first appeared on the swing tags of ellesse’s Jet Ski pants before going on to feature on the thigh area. Believe it or not, the penguin was ellesse’s animal of choice as founder Leonardo Servadio actually kept two penguins as pets!
It was in the early 70’s when ellesse changed their logo altogether to the one we know today due to the merging of their ski and tennis branding into one. This has lasted almost 50 years but ellesse have re-introduced the penguin branding on a capsule collection for the Autumn/Winter season.
The 2015 collection takes inspiration from the ski heritage of the first penguin logo with a distinctly mountain twist on some quintessential ellesse sportswear. As such, several of the pieces in the collection have been made using a yarn from an Italian mill in Palermo for some extra warmth.
There’s plenty of variety in the collection with tees, polos, track jackets and our particular favourite the Mont Blanc Knitted Jumper; made from a soft mix of cashmere and wool, this sweater is the perfect alternative to a Christmas jumper at your works do!
The ellesse Penguin Collection is now available from various stockists including the 80s Casual Classics Website where prices start at around £30 for some tees and rise to £75 for the Mont Blanc Jumper.
