Shorts-Friendly Footwear Edit SS17

With the sun just around the corner, chances are you’ll be digging out that dusty old pair of shorts sooner rather than later. But while a loose-fitting tee and a pair of Ray-Bans are obvious pairings with your shorts, getting your footwear right for the occasion can be more challenging than we’d like to admit.
You want to look smart enough, but shorts are already sending out the ‘casual’ vibe. And when it comes to chunky footwear, shorts aren’t the most forgiving. So whether you’re heading out for a workout, want a simple street aesthetic, or want something as formal as possible, here’s a few footwear options when it comes to wearing shoes with shorts.
Superga White 2750
Put simply, we think the main staple in your summer footwear rack should be a clean pair of white trainers. And for us, these Superga 2750s do the job better than anyone if you’re headed about town. If standing the test of time is anything to go by, the 2750 was first produced in 1911. The lightweight tennis shoe is now available in a leather update to make them firstly more durable than the canvas itineration, but they also work well if you’re heading from work to the bar.

The most obvious style of footwear to wear if trainers just aren’t smart enough is the humble boat shoe. Though they’re often associated with mid-century preppy style, we love these Sperry Top-Sider’s boat shoes. As with the Superga, the timeless design has withstood the test of time having been first sold in 1935, with these leather pair of beauties featuring the signature non-slip rubber soles for a double dose of practicality and coastal style.
Farah Strutt Suede Loafer
If you need something even smarter, a loafer is probably as good as it gets. We like these Strutt Suede Loafers from Farah. Alongside its slip-on suede upper, they feature a classic shape round and signature loafer tassel detailing for a bit of added sophistication.
El Ganso Canvas Chukka Shoes
Website: El Ganso
If you’re heading to sunnier climates and want a splash of colour, you’ll struggle to find something that says ‘holiday footwear’ more than these canvas chukkas from El Ganso. While they’ve been around for a decade or so, we reckon you won’t have heard of Spanish clothing label El Ganso. Bizarrely, El Ganso’s first pair of trainers were actually inspired by a model worn by Slovak soldiers in World War II, and their footwear collection has taken on those colourways which quickly found their niche on the streets of Madrid.
adidas Pure Boost LTD
For those of you heading to the gym and in need of a real pair of casual runners, there’s not many better around at the moment that the adidas Pure Boost. Presented in a clean grey colourway, the energy returning Boost midsole is placed underneath a crafted knit upper, offering unparalleled comfort and performance. The Three Stripes branding and a white Continental rubber outsole really set these apart from the rest.
Timberland Courtside Oxford
But our favourite pair of shoes this summer is these beautiful Courtside Oxfords from Timberland. Sleek and simple, the Courtside Oxford features smooth full grain nubuck leather uppers and signature Timberland laces. Complete with breathable lining and eco-friendly outsole, these Oxfords strike the perfect balance between smart and casual.
